Something about Campo Staffi

Description

The crag of Campo Staffi is located on a small rock, E/NE faced. With its 1840m above the level of the sea it’s probably the highest sport crag in Lazio and one of the highest in Central Italy.

The facing and the location make this climbing spot perfect for the summer climbing, but it can also be attended during the hottest days of the springtime and of the autumn.

It was established by Carlo Barrini, with the financial contribution of the near Rifugio Viperella (= Viperella Hut) and of the Sport Association  SVASA, with the express aim of establishing a climbing spot oriented towards familiarising children with climbing.

In fact, it offers about a dozen of very easy routes through a good limestone, short and well bolted. The space under the routes is quite wide and comfortable, and the approach is an enjoyable walk, (not short, but easy), and the view is amazing. Thus this spot is suitable for family picnics, where you can introduce your children to climbing in a convivial setting.

There are also three easy short routes (III grade) equipped only with a chain at the top, so that the parents can enjoy some trad climbing.

As an alternative, being Campo Staffi the start point for the summit climbing of the highest mountains of the Lazio (that is Tarino, Viglio, Contento mountains and other), its crag is good to end a nice mountaineering stroll with an easy climb.

Finally, as this spot is good for picnics, remember that no open fires are allowed, and that it’s strictly forbidden leaving rubbish.

Last, but not least, remember that in a mountaineering environment, if you see that the sky gets dark, and threats rain you must run away.
