Description
The crag of Stockholm is composed of two areas, separated by a protruding rock spur that reaches the sea. On top of this spur, there is the Stokholm Hotel, which gives its name to the crag. It's one of the most aesthetic climbing spot in Eastern Sicily, characterized by a wall of marmoreal limestone that rises on a fine shingle beach, just a few meters from the crystal clear sea of Taormina, one if the main tourist destination in Sicily. Site of great charm and beauty, Taormina is a beautiful town that attracts visitors from all over the world for the Greek-Roman theatre, the medieval streets, the breathtaking views, the excellent food, and the wonderful beaches. Such amazing tourist center offers everything, but with quite a high standard. For the climbers on a tight budget it's is advisable the stretch of coast from "Giardini Naxos" to Letojanni, where there are many campings, guest houses and trattorias. The two areas of Stockholm are sunny in the morning and go in shadow during the afternoon. They are usually very quiet, except in summer, when the near beach is full of bathers. The equipment of the crag started in 2000 by S. Soraci and M. Tropea, and later was continued by R. Cammara, S. Anile, J. Bonaventura and M. Monaco. The marine environment is impacting on the anchors, some of which can be damaged by the saltiness, and so dangerous. Thus we recommend to visually inspect, where it's possible, the condition of the anchors on the wall, or, alternatively, to ask the local climbers. The routes are mainly overhanging and the climbing style is very athletic, modern and bouldery, because the rock is continuously under the erosive action of the wind and of the sea water, that round out it. That is why Stockholm is not suitable for beginners, but rather it's good for those looking for performance. Stockholm is recommended for climbing with the Western winds and not recommended for climbing during the hot and wet days.
Approach
From the highway A18 exit at Taormina. Just after the tollgate, turn right toward the beach. Once at the first junction turn left on the seafront and park on the right side of the road, near a Restaurant.
