Description

The crag of Valdesi is located on the Northern side of Monte Pellegrino. It’s a varied system of rock walls extending to the Celesi Head (or Valdesi), overlooking the whole zone. In other words, it’s the evident ridge extending up to the coastline, marking the border with the Addaura zone.

The Valdesi crag, together with the Schiavo crag, is the cradle of the climbing in Palermo, where the mountaineering schools and the climbers of the city took the first steps since the end of the Second World War.

The rock wall is 60m high, on average, with two different exposures. This guide covers the West faced part, consisting into the Reti, Diedro Bianco, Centrale and Gare areas. A gully divides the Western face from the Northern one.

The Western rock wall of Valdesi, together with the Schiavo crag, is one of the most attended climbing spots in Sicily, due to the wide variety of the routes.

The rock quality is superb. It’s a compact limestone, grey (in the vertical stretches), red or yellow (in the overhanging ones). The rock walls are cut through by many cracks, corners and chimneys, and speckled with holes and little caves.

Approach

Dal centro di Palermo si attraversa il Parco della Favorita in direzione Mondello, con mezzo proprio o autobus n.806 (costo ticket, 1,4 euro), proseguendo su Viale Regina Margherita. Al termine della discesa, in corrispondenza di una rotatoria con pompe di benzina, voltare a destra su Via Monte Ercta, la strada che da Mondello sale al Santuario di S. Rosalia (attualmente chiusa per caduta massi, anche se il divieto è ignorato da tutti). Le pareti sono subito ben visibili e la zona di Valdesi Centrale si presenterà alla vostra destra subito dopo la prima curva a sinistra. Possibilità di parcheggio sul marciapiede a lato della strada.
